North Carolina Youth Detained for New Year's ISIS-Related Attack Scheme

North Carolina Youth Detained for New Year's ISIS-Related Attack Scheme

Post by : Meena Hassan

A young man aged 18 from North Carolina has been apprehended for intending to execute a lethal mass attack on New Year's Eve, inspired by the Islamic State (ISIS). Law enforcement officials discovered hammers, knives, and a detailed plan for the assault at his residence during a search.

Christian Sturdivant aimed to strike civilians at locations such as a grocery store and a Burger King. The FBI had been surveilling him since 2022 and intervened once he reached out to individuals he thought were ISIS affiliates; these were, in fact, undercover law enforcement agents.

In mid-December, Sturdivant expressed his allegiance to ISIS and disclosed his intentions to "conduct jihad soon." A search on December 29 revealed a handwritten note titled "The New Years Attack 2026," detailing his objective to attack as many civilians as possible, specifically targeting non-Muslims, LGBTQ groups, Jews, and Christians.

In addition to the attack blueprint, authorities confiscated two hammers, two butcher knives, tactical gloves, and a vest hidden under his bed. Previously, on December 14, Sturdivant had sent a video to an undercover operative showcasing the weapons he planned to use.

Sturdivant is charged with attempting to provide material support to a foreign terrorist organization. He appeared in court in Charlotte, where he remains in federal custody, facing a maximum sentence of 20 years if convicted.
