In a nail-biting CFP quarterfinal at the Sugar Bowl, Ole Miss pulled off a stunning 39-34 win against third-ranked Georgia, driven by remarkable performances from quarterback Trinidad Chambliss and kicker Lucas Carneiro.
Chambliss passed for 362 yards and threw two touchdowns, executing crucial plays when needed the most. Carneiro delivered the final blow with a 47-yard field goal as the clock wound down. This victory signifies Ole Miss's second postseason win since Pete Golding took over as head coach after Lane Kiffin moved to LSU on November 30.
Reflecting on their journey, Chambliss stated, “People had doubts about us before the season and even after Coach left. We want to enjoy the game, and that’s coming through now.” Golding praised his squad for maintaining their focus amidst challenges.
Georgia, ranked No. 3, showed great determination under coach Kirby Smart, who deemed it an “unbelievable college football game” showcasing the essence of the CFP. Despite trailing 34-24 late in the fourth quarter, Georgia managed to equalize before Carneiro’s decisive kick.
Highlight moments included a 40-yard pass from Chambliss to De’Zhaun Stribling on a pivotal third down, which set up the game-winning field goal. Ole Miss also benefited from a safety during Georgia's last kickoff attempt.
Both quarterbacks showed extraordinary resilience. Chambliss adeptly evaded pressure to sustain drives, whereas Georgia’s Gunner Stockton delivered two key fourth-down conversions and rushed for two touchdowns despite taking significant hits.
Ole Miss outgained Georgia 473 yards to 343, with Harrison Wallace III leading the reception with 156 yards and a touchdown, while Kewan Lacy contributed 98 rushing yards and two touchdowns.
With this victory, Ole Miss moves forward to face Miami in the CFP semifinals at the Fiesta Bowl, showcasing their impressive playoff performance under Golding’s guidance.
