Oman Reaffirms Cooperation With IAEA for Peaceful Uses

Oman Reaffirms Peaceful Nuclear Cooperation

Oman has reaffirmed its continued cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency to promote the peaceful use of nuclear technology and support modern development. The statement was delivered during the 70th Session of the IAEA General Conference in Vienna on September 16, 2026.

Oman Highlights Cooperation With IAEA Member States

Oman's statement was delivered by Faiza Saif Al Siyabi, Charge d'Affaires of the Permanent Mission of Oman to the IAEA. The country expressed appreciation for the efforts of the IAEA Secretariat and highlighted the importance of cooperation among member states.

Oman Supports IAEA Global Initiatives

Oman said it is interested in actively participating in several IAEA initiatives, including Atoms for Food, the Global Network of Isotopes in Hydrology Laboratories and Atoms for Heritage. Oman also requested participation in the 2027–2028 cycle of the Comprehensive Capacity-Building Initiative for State Systems of Accounting for and Control of Nuclear Material.

Focus on Food Safety and Nuclear Education

The country also outlined its plans to continue Technical Cooperation Programme projects for 2028–2029. The projects will focus on areas including food safety, crop pest control and the One Health approach, while Oman will continue supporting nuclear science and technology education and related international initiatives.

Muscat to Host Regional Training Courses

Oman announced that Muscat will host a regional training course for Arab states in West Asia on Cyclotron Production of Radionuclides in November 2026. A GCC regional training course on Genomics and Bioinformatics of Disease Vectors is also scheduled to take place in January 2027.

Oman Highlights Cancer Care and Nuclear Medicine

The statement highlighted the Sultan Qaboos Comprehensive Cancer Care and Research Centre, which is seeking to become an IAEA anchor centre in radiotherapy and nuclear medicine. Oman also said the centre maintained Joint Commission International accreditation for patient safety in June 2026.

Oman Reaffirms Commitment to Nuclear Non-Proliferation

Oman renewed its support for the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons and called for the full implementation of the 1995 Resolution on the Middle East. It also said that, through its presidency of the UN Conference on establishing a Middle East zone free of nuclear weapons and other weapons of mass destruction, it would continue supporting dialogue, consensus and a practical step-by-step approach.
