Intensified Investigation into Bhutan-India Car Smuggling

Intensified Investigation into Bhutan-India Car Smuggling

Post by : Shakul

An escalating investigation into vehicle smuggling across borders is underway, with a Bhutan Customs delegation visiting Kerala to aid Indian officials. This collaborative effort is a pivotal part of Operation Numkhor, a comprehensive probe targeting illicit vehicle imports that has garnered widespread attention across the nation.

The visiting delegation, spearheaded by senior officers from Bhutan's customs agency, is currently engaging with Indian authorities in Munnar. Their agenda involves sharing intelligence and strategizing the next steps in tackling the suspected smuggling operations.

Key elements of the investigation pertain to vehicles allegedly brought in unlawfully from Bhutan into India, subsequently registered through fraudulent activities. It is suspected that a substantial number of these vehicles passed through northeastern states before being circulated in various regions of India.

Operation Numkhor has already yielded noteworthy outcomes, including the seizure of numerous luxury automobiles and premium motorcycles in Kerala. Some of these vehicles have been linked to well-known personalities, further elevating public interest in the situation.

Authorities estimate that approximately 15,000 vehicles could have been smuggled into India over the years, resulting in substantial tax evasion losses amounting to crores of rupees. Investigators have flagged hundreds of dubious registrations, especially in states such as Assam.

The case has also drawn the attention of the Enforcement Directorate, which is probing potential money laundering connections. The multifaceted involvement of various agencies underscores the intricate nature and vast scale of the operation.

Officials emphasize that the ongoing partnership between Bhutan and India is vital for verifying vehicle records and enhancing enforcement strategies. Continued collaboration is anticipated, with dedicated efforts aimed at dismantling the smuggling operation and mitigating future infractions.
