On Tuesday, Anthropic's AI chatbot Claude experienced a significant global outage, affecting its website, desktop app, mobile services, and API functionalities.
Outage tracking site Downdetector reported a surge in user complaints around midday, signaling a broad disruption. Users quickly overwhelmed the support channels, indicating problems were pervasive and not confined to specific locations.
This outage disrupted various components within the Claude ecosystem. Reports indicated that most users couldn't access the main site, with many also struggling with the desktop and mobile versions. Numerous complaints included failed conversations, absent responses, and extreme slowdowns rendering the platform unusable.
Claude’s API services, utilized by companies and developers to incorporate Anthropic’s AI into their projects, were also compromised. Consequently, various third-party applications that rely on Claude faced significant errors and interruptions.
Users expressed their frustrations on social media and forums, sharing images of loading issues, error notifications, and instances of blank chatbot interactions.
In response, Anthropic acknowledged the outage on its status page, noting it was facing "elevated errors across multiple models." Key models like Claude 3.5 Sonnet and Claude 3 Opus were specifically mentioned.
The company later updated the status to "Identified," revealing that engineers had pinpointed the outage's cause and were diligently working on rectifying the situation.
While Anthropic has not disclosed a timeline for complete service restoration, thousands of users globally, including professionals and students who depend on Claude for various tasks, await a resolution.
Efforts to restore normal operations are ongoing as users look for the full reinstatement of services across all of Claude's platforms.
