In a significant political moment for Armenia, Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan has announced a victory in the parliamentary elections, even as counting continues nationwide. During a press conference held early Monday, Pashinyan hailed the preliminary results as monumental for his Civil Contract party, which displayed a robust lead according to early tallies.
Data from Armenia’s Central Election Commission revealed that with over 20% of polling stations reporting, the ruling Civil Contract party garnered approximately 54.5% of the votes. Meanwhile, the Strong Armenia alliance, its main rival, received about 22% support, with other opposition factions trailing significantly.
Regarded as a pivotal event in Armenia's political landscape, this election marks the first national parliamentary vote following the country’s military setback against Azerbaijan in 2023. This defeat has shifted public discourse surrounding national security and the future geopolitical stance of Armenia.
Since taking office in 2018, Pashinyan has aimed to strengthen ties with Western nations, seeking to diminish Armenia's historical reliance on Russia. His administration is also engaged in peace negotiations with Azerbaijan, aiming for a stable resolution after years of regional conflict.
A strong electoral outcome for Pashinyan could enhance his political capital to further pursue sensitive diplomatic efforts, including peace talks with Azerbaijan and fostering improved relations with Turkey—both critical for Armenia's economic future and regional stability.
Voter turnout approached 59%, indicating substantial public interest in the elections. Analysts observed that this contest effectively served as a referendum on Pashinyan's governance, where voters assessed his reform policies against opposition calls for closer ties with Russia.
While official preliminary results are anticipated later on Monday, the early figures imply that Pashinyan and his Civil Contract party are poised to secure another significant mandate, potentially influencing Armenia’s domestic and foreign policy directions for the foreseeable future.
