In a significant political move, the House of Representatives in the Philippines has voted to impeach Vice President Sara Duterte. This decision follows accusations of unexplained wealth and alleged threats directed at President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. The overwhelming vote, which resulted in 257 in favor and just 25 against the impeachment, marks a severe escalation in the ongoing political tensions between the nation’s leadership. As the future of Duterte's political aspirations hangs in the balance ahead of the 2028 elections, the case will now transition to the Senate for trial.

Supporters of President Marcos clearly dominate the House, as seen in the vote that sees nine lawmakers abstaining. The associated impeachment claims involve dubious bank transactions, misuse of sensitive government funds, and controversial statements purportedly threatening the president and his family. Duterte stands firm on her innocence, with her legal team preparing a robust defense for the Senate proceedings.

Tension escalated in the political sphere of Manila when Senate President Vicente Sotto III, who had shown intent to expedite Duterte’s trial, was ousted by a majority of senators. This sudden leadership change has left uncertainty regarding the timeline and structure of the Senate hearings tied to the vice president.

Amid this political upheaval, Senator Ronald dela Rosa, a former police chief closely allied with former President Rodrigo Duterte, re-emerged in the Senate after a noticeable absence. Reports indicate that investigators from the National Bureau of Investigation sought to detain him following an arrest warrant from the International Criminal Court connected to alleged crimes against humanity linked to anti-drug efforts during his tenure.

The ICC has specified that these allegations include the claimed murder of at least 32 individuals between 2016 and 2018 while dela Rosa served as national police chief. Meanwhile, former President Duterte is currently facing trial in the Netherlands over similar accusations stemming from his anti-drug campaign, which has provoked numerous fatalities. Filipino authorities are also investigating the actions of police officials concerning the contentious operations.

Vice President Sara Duterte has consistently denied accusations related to corruption and misconduct. Her defense argues that these impeachment proceedings are fueled by political motivations, emphasizing that all claims must be substantiated during the Senate trial. She has accused President Marcos and his allies of attempting to undermine her political stature amidst speculation regarding her intentions for the 2028 election.

The impeachment complaints also alluded to statements made by Duterte during an online conference back in 2024, in which she warned of potential threats to President Marcos and others if her safety were compromised. Following the backlash, she clarified that her statements were about her personal security and not direct threats. Despite the ongoing turmoil, independent polls suggest that Sara Duterte continues to be a widely popular political figure. Analysts predict that the impeachment could intensify the political rift in the Philippines and influence the political landscape moving forward.
