A powerful 7.8-magnitude earthquake rocked the southern Philippines, officially resulting in 37 fatalities and displacing more than 20,000 individuals, marking a tragic event in the nation’s recent history. As search and rescue teams mobilized on Tuesday, local authorities pursued efforts to find survivors trapped beneath debris in the aftermath of the disaster.
The earthquake struck off Mindanao Island at dawn on Monday, causing widespread chaos as people rushed outdoors, fearing for their safety. In a bid to escape potential tsunami risks, numerous coastal residents evacuated, although significant tsunami damage did not occur despite initial concerns.
General Santos City, a pivotal area for trade and fishing, faced considerable destruction, with reports of numerous building collapses and disrupted transport networks. The city recorded at least 13 casualties, and emergency responders continued to evaluate damaged infrastructures to locate any remaining victims.
The most severe consequences unfolded in Sarangani Province, where a landslide engulfed several houses in the mountainous town of Glan, resulting in at least 18 confirmed deaths. Rescue teams are tirelessly working to clear debris and locate missing persons in the area.
Early government assessments show that about 2,000 residences and over 100 government buildings incurred damage across the impacted regions. Close to 500 people sustained injuries, while many sought refuge in temporary shelters. Schools across various areas have remained closed pending safety inspections by engineers to verify the soundness of the facilities.
The earthquake has also disrupted public transportation and essential services. General Santos International Airport halted operations, leading to numerous flight cancellations. Residents have been advised to stay alert as the region continues to experience strong aftershocks that could undermine already weakened structures.
President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has initiated a comprehensive emergency response, dispatching top disaster management officials to the region to oversee relief efforts. In solidarity, international allies such as the United States, Japan, France, and New Zealand have expressed their readiness to assist in recovery operations. The Philippines, situated along the Pacific Ring of Fire, is known for its vulnerability to natural disasters, including frequent earthquakes and typhoons.
