Search for Philippines Senator Linked to ICC Charges

Post by : Shakul

The Philippine authorities are stepping up efforts to locate Senator Ronald Dela Rosa following a directive from the justice chief to act on an International Criminal Court warrant associated with alleged crimes against humanity during the infamous anti-drug campaign under Duterte.

Justice Secretary Fredderick Vida announced that Dela Rosa is now deemed a fugitive and warned that aiding his evasion could lead to criminal charges. Law enforcement agencies are actively pursuing leads on the senator’s location nationwide.

Dela Rosa, who previously held the position of national police chief during Rodrigo Duterte's presidency, was a significant figure in the contentious anti-drug operations that resulted in numerous deaths, drawing substantial scrutiny from human rights advocates and foreign governments.

The ICC has implicated Dela Rosa in the deaths of at least 32 individuals between July 2016 and April 2018, claiming these killings were part of a larger operation suggestive of crimes against humanity.

Rodrigo Duterte was apprehended last year and moved to The Hague, where he is undergoing trial with the ICC. Ongoing investigations into other senior figures involved in the anti-drug actions are still in process according to Philippine officials.

Efforts by Dela Rosa to challenge the ICC warrant were dismissed by the Philippine Supreme Court, which upheld that the country’s prior withdrawal from the tribunal does not exempt him from indictment. His attempts to evade arrest have reportedly led him into hiding for several months.

He made a brief appearance at the Philippine Senate earlier this month before chaotic events accompanied by gunfire reportedly allowed him to escape. Investigations are underway to determine if the disturbances were intentional.

This situation has heightened the political discord between the Duterte family and the administration of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., with Vice President Sara Duterte alleging targeted political actions against her family following her father's arrest.

These developments have ignited significant discourse regarding accountability, justice, and the future direction of the political environment in the Philippines, in light of the ongoing manhunt for Dela Rosa.
