Breakthrough in Abu Dhabi: First Uniportal Robotic Lung Surgery in the UAE

Post by : Bianca Haleem

In a remarkable advancement for healthcare, Burjeel Medical City has successfully conducted the UAE’s inaugural uniportal robotic lobectomy, reinforcing Abu Dhabi's position as a hub for healthcare innovation.

The operation was performed on a 37-year-old patient diagnosed with stage one lung cancer. Utilizing a sophisticated approach, the surgical team removed a section of the lung via a single 3cm incision, employing robotic technology to enhance precision.

The patient sought medical help due to a lingering dry cough unresponsive to treatment. After undergoing crucial tests, including a CT scan and biopsy, early-stage lung cancer was diagnosed. A multidisciplinary medical team recommended surgery following a thorough evaluation.

Dr. Taj Mohammed Fiyaz Chowdhry, a consultant thoracic surgeon, spearheaded the operation using the advanced da Vinci Xi system. The surgery was completed in approximately four hours without any complications.

Dr. Chowdhry noted that this approach is particularly effective for early-stage cancer with no significant lymph node involvement, as it enhances patient outcomes while minimizing surgical trauma and post-operative recovery time.

The patient was discharged a mere two days post-surgery, significantly quicker than the typical five to seven days associated with conventional procedures. Remarkably, recovery was fast-tracked, allowing the patient to resume work within a month.

Burjeel Medical City emphasized that this achievement underscores the dedication of its multidisciplinary teams and its commitment to harnessing cutting-edge technologies to enhance patient care through minimally invasive techniques.
