The Detroit Pistons secured their playoff prospects with an emphatic 115-94 win against the Cleveland Cavaliers in Game 6 of the Eastern Conference second round on Friday. This crucial victory equalized the series at 3-3, setting the stage for a decisive Game 7 scheduled for Sunday in Detroit.
Leading the charge for the Pistons was Cade Cunningham, who netted 21 points, including five from beyond the arc, ensuring Detroit dominated the second half and delivered a significant playoff win while on the road.
This 21-point triumph marked a historic equalizer, matching a 66-year-old NBA playoff benchmark for the most significant Game 6 road victory by a team trailing 3-2 in the series, previously set when the St. Louis Hawks defeated the Minneapolis Lakers in 1960.
Jalen Duren supported with a solid performance, contributing 15 points and 11 rebounds, while Daniss Jenkins also added 15 points. Off the bench, veteran Paul Reed proved valuable with 17 points.
The Pistons' bench significantly outperformed the Cavaliers’ reserves, outscoring them 48-19. Duncan Robinson made his comeback after missing Game 5 due to back issues, scoring 14 points and landing four three-pointers.
Detroit's defensive prowess was a game-changer, forcing 20 turnovers and transforming them into 28 points. Additionally, they dominated on the boards, converting 13 offensive rebounds into 20 crucial second-chance points.
Pistons coach J.B. Bickerstaff recognized the team's defensive effort during his post-game remarks.
Entering halftime with a 54-41 lead, Detroit quickly increased their advantage with a striking 12-2 run in the third quarter. Although the Cavaliers narrowed the gap to six at 74-68, the Pistons countered with a 13-2 run to regain control.
Evan Mobley's missed dunk late in the third allowed Marcus Sasser to score a buzzer-beating layup, pushing Detroit ahead 84-70 at the end of the quarter.
On the Cavaliers’ side, James Harden led with 23 points, while Donovan Mitchell and Mobley contributed 18 points each. This marked Cleveland's first home loss of the postseason.
Post-game, Mitchell acknowledged the team’s inability to meet Detroit's aggressive tempo, while Harden commented on the overall lack of rhythm on both sides of the game.
The victor of Sunday’s Game 7 at Detroit will clinch a spot in the Eastern Conference Finals.
