Vatican representatives indicated that the pope endorsed this document on May 15, marking a poignant anniversary—135 years since Pope Leo XIII unveiled the influential “Rerum Novarum” encyclical concerning labor rights at the onset of the Industrial Revolution.
This forthcoming encyclical is expected to underscore the necessity for artificial intelligence to uphold human dignity, foster social connections, and promote peace. Pope Leo XIV contends that the burgeoning AI revolution poses critical moral and societal challenges akin to those encountered during the Industrial Revolution over a century ago.
Officials within the Church maintain that the encyclical will frame AI within the overarching principles of Catholic social teaching, addressing issues related to labor rights, justice, economic equity, and human accountability. Analysts suggest that the Vatican is strategically assuming a pivotal role in advocating for ethical AI governance on a global scale.
The pope has persistently cautioned against the excessive dependence on artificial intelligence in everyday life, voicing apprehensions regarding robot relationships supplanting genuine human interactions, the proliferation of deepfake technology spreading falsehoods, and AI-generated outputs undermining creativity and veracity.
