In a significant humanitarian effort, Qatar Charity (QC) has delivered essential food baskets to vulnerable families in Chad, responding to the pressing food security crisis affecting the region.
The organization focused its assistance on the most impacted households surrounding the capital, N'Djamena. A total of approximately 14,000 individuals benefitted from the distribution of 2,000 comprehensive food baskets.
The initiative was executed across four main sites near N'Djamena, where 500 baskets were distributed at each location. This strategic approach ensured widespread coverage, reaching families in urgent need across various neighborhoods. Each food basket contained vital supplies aimed at sustaining household needs for several weeks.
Working in collaboration with the Ministry of Social Action, Solidarity and Humanitarian Affairs, QC's field teams were instrumental in targeting the right beneficiaries for an effective distribution process.
Chad is facing a severe rise in food insecurity, and numerous reports indicate that it’s one of the Sahel region's nations most adversely impacted by ongoing crises. The World Food Programme (WFP) estimates millions are grappling with various levels of food insecurity.
The Global Hunger Index for 2025 categorizes hunger in Chad as “serious.” Furthermore, the Famine Early Warning Systems Network (FEWS NET) anticipates that between 1.5 and 2 million individuals could require emergency food support during the lean season from June to September, a period marked by dwindling food stocks and soaring prices.
Factors contributing to this crisis include recurring droughts and floods, poor agricultural output, extreme poverty rates, as well as ongoing displacement and refugee movements in the region.
Additionally, health conditions remain alarming, with over 30% of children under five experiencing stunting due to chronic malnutrition, pointing to a deeper systemic issue beyond immediate relief efforts.
Through this initiative, Qatar Charity strives to alleviate the plight of affected families and mitigate the adverse effects of the escalating food insecurity in Chad.
