The Shura Council of Qatar is actively participating in the 152nd General Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) and the 217th Governing Council meeting, currently underway in Istanbul, Türkiye. The delegation is led by HE Speaker Hassan bin Abdullah Al Ghanim, with the five-day session commencing on Wednesday.
The assembly is being held under the theme “Nurturing hope, securing peace and ensuring justice for future generations,” reflecting the urgent need for coordinated global efforts in addressing evolving international challenges.
This year’s session takes place against a backdrop of complex geopolitical developments, calling for comprehensive and multi-level parliamentary responses. Key discussions during the assembly include international peace and security, building a fair and sustainable global economy, and strengthening the role of parliaments in post-conflict governance.
The agenda also highlights critical areas such as social justice, inclusive development, and the implementation of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Special emphasis is being placed on social inclusion and empowering persons with disabilities as part of broader global development priorities.
On the sidelines of the main event, HE Speaker Al Ghanim participated in both the Gulf parliamentary meeting and the Arab parliamentary coordination meeting held in Istanbul on Tuesday. These meetings focused on enhancing coordination among Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) legislative bodies and aligning positions on key IPU agenda items.
The Arab coordination meeting further addressed important matters, including nominations for the IPU Secretary-General, filling vacancies in committees, and discussing a proposed emergency agenda item. Participants also worked on unifying Arab perspectives on various global parliamentary issues.
Additionally, HE Dr. Hamda bint Hassan Al Sulaiti, Deputy Speaker of the Shura Council and a member of the IPU Executive Committee, delivered a detailed briefing during the Arab group meeting. She reviewed the committee’s activities and progress since the 151st General Assembly, highlighting ongoing efforts to strengthen parliamentary collaboration.
The participation of Qatar’s Shura Council underscores its commitment to international dialogue, cooperation, and advancing peace and sustainable development through parliamentary diplomacy.
