Qatar Backs Daren Tang’s Reappointment as WIPO Director General

Post by : Bianca Haleem

The State of Qatar participated in the 67th Assemblies of the Member States of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), held in Geneva, to confirm the appointment of the organization’s Director General.

The Qatari delegation was led by Dr. Hind Abdulrahman Al Muftah, Permanent Representative of Qatar to the United Nations Office in Geneva.

Speaking on behalf of Qatar, she expressed strong support for the reappointment of Daren Tang of Singapore for a second term as Director General of WIPO. She praised his leadership and noted that the renewed global confidence reflects his efforts in strengthening the organization’s role.

She highlighted major achievements during his tenure, including the successful conclusion of two historic treaties in one year — the Treaty on Intellectual Property and Genetic Resources and the Design Law Treaty.

Dr. Al Muftah also underlined the growing partnership between Qatar and WIPO, stating that the Director General’s first term saw significant progress in strategic cooperation. She noted Qatar’s efforts to modernize its intellectual property system, including the development of a National Intellectual Property Strategy and joining several new international agreements managed by WIPO.

In addition, Qatar has signed multiple memoranda of understanding to boost academic and technical cooperation with the organization.

Reaffirming Qatar’s commitment, she stressed the country’s support for WIPO’s initiatives and its aim to further strengthen cooperation in the coming years. She also emphasized the importance of intellectual property in driving innovation, creativity, and achieving Sustainable Development Goals while enhancing economic and social benefits for member states.
