In May 2026, South Korea achieved a historic high in exports, driven by a remarkable surge in the demand for semiconductors and AI technologies. Official data released on Monday indicated a sharp increase in overseas shipments, underscoring the nation's expanding influence in the global technology supply chain.
The export value soared by 53.2% from the previous year, totaling an impressive $87.8 billion. This marks the third straight month where South Korea's exports have surpassed the $80 billion mark, reflecting robust global interest in technological products and industrial components.
The semiconductor industry was the primary driver of this growth. Chip exports skyrocketed by 169.4% year-on-year, reaching a record $37.2 billion—the highest monthly total the country has ever seen. Analysts credit this substantial rise to the ongoing AI boom, which has sparked demand for advanced memory chips and supporting data center infrastructure.
Imports in South Korea also saw a significant increase, rising by 20.8% to $60.8 billion, leading to a trade surplus of $26.95 billion. This strong surplus highlights the nation's competitive edge in high-value tech exports and manufacturing.
Exports to key trading partners demonstrated impressive growth as well. Shipments to the United States surged by 59.1% to $15.97 billion, bolstered by growing demand for AI-related and electronic goods. Meanwhile, exports to ASEAN nations grew by 58.4% to $15.85 billion, while those to the European Union increased by 2.4% to $6.19 billion.
However, some sectors encountered obstacles. The automobile export sector saw a decrease of 5.9%, landing at $5.83 billion, attributed to fewer working days, supply chain issues, and U.S. tariffs impacting global trade dynamics.
Additionally, exports to the Middle East fell by 7.7%, amounting to $1.27 billion, with car exports particularly affected, experiencing a 27% drop during the month. Nonetheless, the outstanding performance of semiconductors and tech exports more than offset declines in other areas, allowing South Korea to secure one of its strongest export periods on record.
