Dubai: Indian cricketer Rinku Singh is set to rejoin the Indian team ahead of their crucial Super 8 match against the West Indies cricket team at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata on Sunday. The update was confirmed by a source in the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).
Rinku lost his father, Khanchand Singh, on Friday morning. He passed away at a hospital in Greater Noida after battling fourth-stage cancer. The final rites were performed in Aligarh on Friday, where family members and local residents gathered to pay their respects. A deeply emotional Rinku carried his father’s mortal remains during the funeral procession.
Condolences poured in from across the cricket community. BCCI Vice-President Rajeev Shukla described the loss as deeply heartbreaking and extended support to Rinku and his family during this difficult time.
Earlier, Rinku had flown back home from India’s T20 World Cup squad after his father’s health worsened following the team’s first Super 8 match against the South Africa national cricket team. He later rejoined the squad in Chennai before India’s game against the Zimbabwe national cricket team on Thursday.
The defending champions reached Kolkata on Friday evening as they prepare for the decisive Super 8 encounter. In the ongoing tournament, the middle-order left-hander has scored 24 runs in five innings. He remained unbeaten twice, with his highest score being 11 not out.
