Saudi Arabia’s newest national airline, Riyadh Air, has officially launched its first scheduled Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner service, marking a major milestone in the Kingdom’s aviation transformation plans. The inaugural flight departed from King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh and successfully arrived at London Heathrow, opening a new chapter for the rapidly growing carrier.
The historic flight, designated RX401, represents the airline’s first commercial operation using its newly delivered Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft. Riyadh Air recently received its first three custom-built Dreamliners, with additional aircraft expected to join the fleet in the coming months as expansion plans accelerate.
The launch of Dreamliner operations follows months of preparation under the airline’s "Pathway to Perfect" readiness program. During this phase, Riyadh Air tested passenger services, airport operations and onboard experiences to ensure a seamless transition into full-scale commercial operations.
Passengers traveling on the new aircraft can experience a modern four-class cabin layout featuring Business Elite, Business Class, Premium Economy and Economy Class. The aircraft is equipped with advanced inflight entertainment systems, Bluetooth connectivity and high-speed digital services designed to deliver a premium travel experience.
Riyadh Air was established in 2023 and is wholly owned by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund. The airline forms a key part of the Kingdom’s Vision 2030 strategy, which aims to strengthen global connectivity, boost tourism and diversify the national economy beyond oil revenues.
The carrier has ambitious expansion plans and intends to connect Riyadh with more than 100 international destinations by 2030. By the end of 2026, the airline aims to operate flights to nearly 20 destinations while continuing to expand its fleet through a major order of 72 Boeing 787 Dreamliners.
Industry analysts believe Riyadh Air will play a crucial role in positioning Riyadh as a major global aviation gateway linking Asia, Europe and Africa. The project is expected to contribute billions of dollars to Saudi Arabia’s non-oil economy while creating thousands of direct and indirect employment opportunities across the aviation sector.
