Russian Drone Attack Kills One and Injures Seven in Ukraine's Zaporizhzhya

Post by : Raina Al-Fahim

A Russian drone attack on Zaporizhzhya in southeastern Ukraine has killed one person and injured seven others, according to Ukrainian officials. The overnight attack caused damage to residential areas, civilian infrastructure, and several public buildings in the city.

Local authorities said dozens of Russian drones were launched toward Zaporizhzhya. One man was killed when a drone struck his car, while seven other people were injured during the attack. Emergency crews were sent to the affected areas to help residents and deal with the damage.

Governor Ivan Fedorov said a multi-storey residential building caught fire after being hit. Several homes and civilian facilities were also damaged. Reports said a university building and a shopping centre suffered damage during the attack.

Officials warned that more drone strikes could follow, as Russian drones were still detected in Ukrainian airspace on Wednesday morning. Residents were advised to remain alert and follow safety instructions from local authorities.

Zaporizhzhya is an important city in Ukraine and is known for being near the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant, which has been under Russian control since the early stages of the war in 2022. However, there were no reports that the nuclear facility was affected by the latest attack.

Russia has continued to use drones and missiles in its war against Ukraine, while Ukrainian air defence systems work to intercept incoming threats. Despite these efforts, attacks continue to cause damage and civilian casualties.

According to the United Nations, civilian losses in Ukraine have risen in recent months. May 2026 was reported as the deadliest month for civilians since the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion, with hundreds killed and many more injured.

The latest Russian drone attack on Zaporizhzhya highlights the ongoing dangers faced by civilians as the conflict between Russia and Ukraine continues.
