Romania Reports Russian Drone Attack on Apartment Building, Two Injured

Post by : Shweta

Romania has reported that a Russian drone struck a residential apartment complex in the eastern city of Galați, resulting in injuries to two civilians and igniting strong responses from NATO and European leaders. The event unfolded during an extensive overnight assault by Russia targeting critical infrastructure across the border in Ukraine, particularly in the Danube River vicinity.

Romanian officials noted that the drone crossed into their airspace prior to crashing into a ten-story residential building situated near the Ukrainian frontier. The incident sparked a fire on the roof, necessitating the evacuation of numerous residents by emergency services. A woman and a child sustained minor injuries and were promptly taken for medical care.

The Defence Ministry of Romania stated that radar systems detected the drone as it traversed national airspace during the Russian offensives against Ukrainian targets. In response to the airspace incursion, the Romanian military scrambled two F-16 jets along with a helicopter. Authorities also issued emergency alerts to nearby inhabitants, but the drone's low altitude complicated interception efforts before it struck the building.

Nicușor Dan, Romania's President, denounced the attack as one of the most critical security threats to Romania since the commencement of the Russia-Ukraine conflict in 2022. Subsequent to the strike, the Romanian government summoned the Russian envoy and convened urgent defence discussions. Officials deemed the drone's penetration into Romanian airspace as a serious breach of international law and an infringement on national sovereignty.

Mark Rutte, NATO's Secretary General, expressed strong concern over the incident, reiterating the alliance's readiness to safeguard every portion of NATO territory. EU leaders sharply criticized Russia's actions, emphasizing that such attacks near NATO borders escalate the risk of broader regional instability. Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, indicated that Russia had "crossed yet another line" after civilians were hurt within a NATO member state.

This is not an isolated occurrence; prior incidents involving Russian drones or debris have been reported in Romanian airspace during the ongoing conflict. Romanian officials have recorded several airspace violations in recent years, particularly during Russian strikes on Ukrainian ports near the border. However, this incident is regarded as particularly severe due to the direct injury of civilians in a populated area.

Galați, situated close to both the Ukrainian and Moldovan borders, has become increasingly sensitive due to the surrounding military activities tied to the war. Analysts suggest that this incident could prompt NATO to enhance air defence measures throughout Eastern Europe and exert more pressure on Russia concerning border security issues.

Although Russia has not formally claimed accountability for the attack, Romanian officials have confirmed that the drone is associated with a broader Russian offensive targeting Ukraine that night. The event has rekindled concerns throughout Europe regarding the potential escalation of the Ukraine war into NATO territory if such attacks persist.
