Saudi-French Ties Transform AlUla Into Cultural Hub

Eight years of cooperation are expanding AlUla's role in art, archaeology, design and international cultural exchange

From Ancient Oasis to Global Cultural Destination

Saudi Arabia and France are deepening their cultural partnership in AlUla, transforming the historic oasis from an important archaeological destination into a broader international center for culture, art, research and design.

The cooperation, which began with a joint development agreement eight years ago, has expanded well beyond archaeology. Historical conservation, contemporary art, tourism, education, design and cultural exchange are now part of the wider development vision for AlUla.

French Expertise Supports AlUla's Development

The Royal Commission for AlUla and the French Agency for AlUla Development have played central roles in the partnership. According to the source, more than 170 contracts have been signed with French companies since 2019, with a combined value exceeding $200 million.

The collaboration is bringing French institutional and professional expertise into projects across AlUla while creating opportunities for Saudi cultural practitioners and creative talent to gain greater international exposure.

Villa Hegra Creates New Cultural Platform

Villa Hegra is one of the major results of the Saudi-French cultural partnership. The multidisciplinary institution was agreed upon in 2021 and formally established by royal decree during French President Emmanuel Macron's 2024 visit to Saudi Arabia.

The institution brings together contemporary art, dance, performance, design, cinema and research. It also provides exhibition and studio spaces, educational workshops and AlUla's first indoor cinema. Its opening in 2025 created a new platform for international expertise and local creative talent.

Centre Pompidou Partnership Expands Contemporary Art

The Royal Commission for AlUla has also partnered with France's Centre Pompidou through an intergovernmental agreement. The French institution is providing strategic advice for AlUla's planned contemporary art museum.

The partnership was highlighted through the exhibition “Arduna,” which featured more than 80 works by local and international artists. The exhibition explored changing relationships between people and the environment across six thematic chapters.

Archaeology Reveals AlUla's Ancient History

Archaeological cooperation remains another important part of the relationship. A French-Saudi mission involving researchers from the Royal Commission for AlUla and France's National Center for Scientific Research has spent years conducting research at Dadan.

The discoveries were presented in a permanent exhibition titled “Illuminating Discoveries: Uncovering the Layers of Dadan's History,” which accompanied the site's reopening in late 2025. One discovery provided evidence connecting an important historical period between the Nabataean and early Islamic eras in Wadi Al-Qura.

Education and Research Links With France

AlUla's international academic connections are also expanding. The Royal Commission for AlUla and Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne University are collaborating on archaeology education and research.

Their work includes an international master's programme and field schools, alongside plans for a research chair and center connecting Paris and AlUla. The partnership is designed to strengthen archaeological expertise and create new opportunities for researchers and students.

AlUla Heads to Paris Design Week

AlUla's growing creative profile will also reach France's design sector. The “Life of Forms” exhibition is scheduled for Paris Design Week 2026 from September 8 to 13.

The exhibition will feature work developed through AlUla's artist residency programmes. It will explore the relationship between art and design while highlighting the influence of natural materials and traditional crafts on contemporary creative practices.

A Growing Saudi-French Cultural Partnership

For Saudi Arabia, the partnership provides access to decades of French institutional expertise in heritage, culture and cultural diplomacy. For France, AlUla offers a major platform for its cultural institutions, artists, researchers and creative industries.

The development shows how Saudi-French cooperation in AlUla is increasingly moving beyond archaeological preservation toward a wider cultural ecosystem combining heritage, contemporary creativity, education, research and international exchange.
