Saudi Arabia Calls for Greater Water Cooperation
Saudi Arabia and Senegal have called for stronger international cooperation to address growing water security challenges. The appeal was made during a high-level ministerial event held during the UN General Assembly.
Water Security Linked to Global Stability
Speaking at the event titled “United for Water: A Call for Collective Action,” Saudi Deputy Minister for International Multilateral Affairs Abdulrahman Al-Rassi said water security should be treated as an important issue for international security, economic development and community resilience.
Saudi Arabia Highlights Desalination Experience
Al-Rassi highlighted Saudi Arabia’s experience in managing water scarcity. He said the Kingdom is the world’s largest producer of desalinated water and has placed water governance at the center of its National Water Strategy 2030.

Technology and Governance Seen as Key
The Saudi official said solving the global water crisis requires more than increasing water availability. He emphasized accessibility, effective governance, technology, innovation and international cooperation as important parts of long-term water management.
Senegal Calls for Water to Become a Political Priority
Senegal’s high representative of the president, Amina Tature, said water should receive greater political attention within the international system. She linked water challenges with climate change, economic development and social stability.
UN Warns of Slow Progress on Water Goal
UN Secretary-General’s Special Envoy on Water Retno Marsudi said progress toward Sustainable Development Goal 6 is moving too slowly. She said one in four people worldwide still lack access to safe drinking water, while 3.5 billion people lack safely managed sanitation.
Saudi Arabia to Host World Water Forum in 2027
Senegal welcomed Saudi Arabia’s plan to host the 11th World Water Forum in March 2027. The discussions also referred to the 2026 UN Water Conference, which Senegal and the UAE are scheduled to co-host in Abu Dhabi in December.
