Seoul and Washington Discuss North Korea WMD Threat

Defense officials from South Korea and the United States have held talks in Seoul on strengthening their response to North Korea’s weapons of mass destruction programs. The discussions focused on improving the allies’ practical capabilities to respond if Pyongyang uses nuclear, biological or other WMD weapons.

Allies Warn of Growing Regional Instability

According to South Korea’s Ministry of National Defense, both sides expressed concern that North Korea’s WMD programs are contributing to instability on the Korean Peninsula and across the wider region. Officials discussed ways to strengthen the alliance’s ability to respond effectively to potential threats.

US and South Korea Plan Stronger Joint Capabilities

The two countries discussed measures aimed at improving their combined operational capabilities. The talks included consequence-management planning, which focuses on how the allies would respond to and manage the effects of a potential WMD incident.

Biological Threats Also Part of Discussions

The officials also agreed to maintain cooperation against biological threats. Their discussions included responses to infectious diseases such as COVID-19, highlighting the broader security challenges that can emerge from biological hazards.

Senior Defense Officials Co-Chair Meeting

The meeting was co-chaired by Woo Kyung-suk, Director General of the Policy Planning Bureau at South Korea’s Ministry of National Defense, and Jason Hamm, the US Deputy Assistant Secretary of War for Nuclear Deterrence and Countering Weapons of Mass Destruction Policy.

North Korea Continues Nuclear and Missile Development

The talks come as North Korea continues to develop its nuclear and missile capabilities. Pyongyang has rejected international calls to abandon its nuclear arsenal and has continued to advance weapons systems that could threaten South Korea and the United States.

Seoul and Washington Pledge Continued Cooperation

South Korea and the United States said the meeting helped deepen cooperation in addressing WMD threats. The allies pledged to continue working together to strengthen their ability to respond to potential North Korean attacks and other security challenges.
