His Highness Sheikh Dr Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Ruler of Sharjah, conducted a meeting of the University of Kalba's Board of Trustees on Monday at the university's premises.
Praise for University Progress
During the session, His Highness acknowledged the notable advancements of the University of Kalba in recent times. He highlighted the institution's accomplishments, ongoing initiatives, and expanding partnerships, commending the leadership, board members, and committees for their commitment to enhancement.
Emphasis on Specialized Education
The Ruler discussed the development of higher education in the emirate, which began with the University of Sharjah and the American University of Sharjah. He reinforced the need for specialized institutions across various cities, focusing on sports sciences in Kalba, marine sciences in Khorfakkan, and agricultural sciences in Al Dhaid to cater to local needs.
Approval of a Five-Year Strategy
The Board approved a five-year plan for the University of Kalba running from 2026 to 2031, aimed at:
Enhancing institutional performance and sustainability
Boosting research and innovation efforts
Increasing student employability
Broaden global collaboration
Facilitating digital change and lifelong education
Encouraging community involvement and welfare
New Academic Leadership Appointments
The Board confirmed the appointment of Dr George Nassis as Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs. Additionally, new deans were appointed for the Colleges of Business Administration and Computing and Intelligent Systems.
Introduction of New Programs
The Board approved a new biology program focusing on living organisms. Furthermore, accreditation updates for various new Bachelor of Science programs were discussed, including:
Sports Rehabilitation
Sports Nutrition and Wellness
Esports and Interactive Technologies
Artificial Intelligence and Data Science
Additionally, two specialized tracks under the Physical Education and Sports Sciences program were introduced:
Physical Education
Sports Coaching and Management
Reviewing Achievements
Dr Najwa Al Hosani, Chancellor of the University of Kalba, highlighted key achievements over the recent academic year, noting advancements in academics, research, community outreach, and digital progression.
The Board assessed reports from its various committees, including academic, financial, audit, and development groups, approving several recommendations to support the university's future development.
Student Exhibition
Following the meeting, His Highness attended a student exhibition showcasing accomplishments in sports, research, literature, and education, which also included student participation in an international sports science conference held in Switzerland.
