Historic Participation of Sharjah at Warsaw International Book Fair

Post by : Bianca Haleem

Sharjah has marked a significant milestone with its groundbreaking participation as the first Arab Guest of Honour at the Warsaw International Book Fair, enhancing cultural ties between the UAE and Poland.

During the four-day event, Sharjah showcased a dynamic cultural program across Warsaw, exposing Polish audiences to the richness of Emirati and Arab literature, arts, and traditions. This participation aligns with the vision of His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Ruler of Sharjah, who has long championed cultural initiatives that position the emirate as a global hub for culture and knowledge.

Beyond the fair, activities extended to universities, theatres, and cultural institutions across the Polish capital, promoting cultural dialogue between Emirati and Polish communities.

The program featured 35 cultural events with 36 writers, poets, and artists from both the UAE and Poland, facilitated by 21 cultural institutions, fostering a vibrant exchange of ideas.

Sheikha Bodour bint Sultan Al Qasimi, Chairperson of the Sharjah Book Authority, led the delegation, emphasizing Sharjah's growing role in nurturing culture and dialogue.

Ahmed bin Rakkad Al Ameri, CEO of the Sharjah Book Authority, conveyed that this initiative mirrors the Ruler of Sharjah's vision, underlining culture as a vital pillar for development and mutual understanding.

He acknowledged the strong interest shown by Polish visitors in Emirati culture, highlighting the profound impact of Sharjah's presence at the fair on fostering understanding of Arab literature and heritage.

According to Al Ameri, the fair not only serves to represent the UAE but also sheds light on the diversity and depth of Arab culture, providing new avenues for collaboration in publishing, translation, and rights exchange.

Jacek Oryl, Director of the Warsaw International Book Fair, praised Sharjah’s participation as pivotal in making this year’s event one of the most illustrious in its history.

Oryl commended the emirate for delivering a multifaceted cultural program that extended beyond standard fair presentations, resonating deeply with attendees.

The initiative helped Polish audiences develop a better understanding of Emirati and Arab culture while fostering new opportunities for cultural collaboration.

Throughout the fair, discussions featuring Emirati and Polish creatives addressed themes of fiction, history, and storytelling, illustrating how personal narratives can bridge cultural gaps.

Sharjah's engagement with academia through specialized programs at the University of Warsaw provided insights into contemporary Emirati culture, covering various artistic disciplines.

The arts were highlighted through a joint exhibition by Emirati and Polish artists, establishing a rich cultural dialogue. Visitors also experienced Emirati culture via performances, showcasing traditional music and crafts.

The event facilitated collaboration among publishers, exploring opportunities in translation and rights exchange, as demonstrated by the six Arabic titles translated into Polish featured at the Sharjah pavilion.

Public interest thrived, with 280 books sold at the pavilion, reflecting an increasing enthusiasm among Polish audiences for Emirati culture and literature.

This successful participation augments Sharjah's stature as a global cultural force and reaffirms its dedication to bridging cultural divides through literature, arts, and academic exchanges.
