Sheikh Sultan Inaugurates Don McCullin Photography Exhibit in Athens

Post by : Bianca Haleem

His Highness Sheikh Sultan bin Ahmed bin Sultan Al Qasimi, the Deputy Ruler of Sharjah and the head of the Sharjah Media Council, has officially inaugurated a significant photography exhibition in Athens, Greece. The exhibition is named “Life, Death, & Everything in Between”, showcasing the work of celebrated photographer Sir Don McCullin.

Organized by the Athens Photo World Awards in collaboration with the Xposure International Photography Festival, a prominent global photography event backed by the Sharjah Government Media Bureau, this exhibition promises to be a standout attraction.

Exhibition Tour and Key Highlights

During his visit, Sheikh Sultan explored the various galleries of the exhibition, taking in a selection of significant works from McCullin’s extensive career spanning over fifty years. The showcased photographs include profound visuals from areas of conflict such as Vietnam, Cambodia, and Lebanon, as well as serene landscapes from England, Africa, India, and Indonesia.

He commended the powerful humanitarian narrative present in McCullin’s photography, illustrating both human suffering and resilience with considerable emotional depth.

Thematic Journey of Life, Death, and Humanity

The exhibition takes visitors on a visual journey through McCullin’s career. Starting from his early explorations of impoverished areas in London, it transitions through intense wartime photography and culminates with tranquil natural scenes. His work is adept at portraying genuine human emotions amidst challenging global issues.

Sir Don McCullin is widely recognized as one of the premier documentary photographers globally. Throughout his career, he has reported on wars and humanitarian crises, frequently under hostile conditions. Regardless of the risks and his own injuries, he has persistently pursued his commitment to truth and the human experience.

Celebrating Global Cultural Exchange

The collaboration between the Xposure International Photography Festival and Athens Photo World Awards underscores the vital role of photography in portraying truths and human experiences. This partnership also highlights Xposure’s ascent as a premier platform for visual storytelling on a global scale.

Permanent Home for the Exhibition in Greece

A notable announcement from the event revealed that McCullin’s works will feature in a permanent exhibition at the MOMus–Thessaloniki Museum of Photography in Greece, ensuring his legacy endures for upcoming generations.

A Special Presentation

During this noteworthy occasion, Sheikh Sultan presented Sir Don McCullin with a unique limited-edition Leica “Monochrom” camera, emblazoned with Sharjah’s emblem and specifically crafted for the Xposure Photography Festival.

Sheikh Sultan Visits the Acropolis Museum

Following the exhibition, Sheikh Sultan visited the renowned Acropolis Museum in Athens, where he toured its many galleries and gained insights into its historical and archaeological significance.

As one of the foremost archaeological museums globally, it encompasses over 25,000 square meters and showcases more than 4,000 artifacts from the Classical and Roman periods.

The museum's collections are organized into three sections: daily life in ancient Athens, sculptures from the Parthenon, and iconic Classical masterpieces like the Caryatid statues. Its contemporary architectural design, featuring glass floors offering views of the Acropolis and state-of-the-art lighting systems, enhances the preservation and presentation of ancient marble artworks.
