Sheikh Sultan Leads UOS Board Meeting, Greenlights AED 1.36bn Budget

His Highness Sheikh Sultan bin Ahmed bin Sultan Al Qasimi, the Deputy Ruler of Sharjah and President of the University of Sharjah, presided over the Board of Trustees meeting at the university’s campus on Wednesday morning.

Opening the meeting, Sheikh Sultan welcomed newly appointed board members and acknowledged the outgoing members for their contributions towards the university’s growth. He expressed confidence in the new board’s potential to bring forward impactful strategies for future development.

He highlighted the institution's progress in enhancing its global academic standing and reinforcing its reputation, mentioning strategic initiatives in various areas, including artificial intelligence and healthcare simulations, while also commending the university’s ability to maintain its academic schedule amid regional challenges.

Emphasis on Research and Future Orientation

Sheikh Sultan stressed the necessity for continuous improvement in the research landscape, modernization of academic offerings, and the integration of innovative technologies. He called for an alignment of academic outcomes with workforce demands, aiming to attract premier academic talent and support the development of Emirati graduates.

AED 1.36 Billion Budget and Graduations Approved

The board approved an operational budget of AED 1.36 billion designated for the 2026–2027 academic year. Furthermore, it sanctioned the graduation of 1,927 students, comprising 1,500 bachelor's degrees, 66 PhDs, 355 master's degrees, and six postgraduate diplomas.

New Academic Offerings and Centers Established

Several innovative academic programmes were given the green light by the board, including a PhD in Nursing, PhD in Advanced Diagnostic Sciences, MSc in Nuclear Technology, and several others in digital media and psychology.

The meeting also initiated the establishment of a University of Sharjah Robotics Centre and discussed collaborations for an Innovation Centre in association with LG and plans with the e& UAE Innovation Centre.

Assessing Academic and Institutional Performance

Updates related to the EDGE Strategy 2024–2030 were reviewed, focusing on developing the research ecosystem, governance, and institutional structure. Promotions for 23 faculty members, including 13 professors and 10 associate professors, were also approved.

Chancellor Prof. Esameldin Agamy presented a performance report outlining advancements in research, infrastructure, and community services, ensuring alignment with national development priorities.

Progress in Rankings and Expansion Initiatives

The report indicated significant progress in international rankings and accreditation, with 49 new accredited programmes launched this academic year, totaling 158 accredited offerings.

Further discussions included updates on healthcare training initiatives, student engagement activities, and plans for establishing a University of Sharjah branch in Egypt.

Meeting Attendance

The meeting was attended by senior officials, various academic leaders, and international experts from distinguished institutions, illustrating the university's robust global partnerships.
