South Korea's Forex Reserves Decline in May

Post by : Shakul

In May 2026, South Korea experienced a slight drop in its foreign exchange reserves as fiscal authorities stepped in to mitigate volatility in the currency markets. The latest data underscores the difficulties policymakers face amidst global economic instability and shifting investor confidence.

The Bank of Korea has reported that the nation's foreign exchange reserves totaled $426.99 billion at May's end, down $880 million from the previous month. This decline follows a robust increase in April, when reserves gained over $4 billion after a notable decrease in March.

The central bank noted that this recent decline is primarily attributed to measures implemented for market stabilization. These included arrangements for foreign currency swaps tied to the national pension system, targeting the alleviation of pressures on the currency market while ensuring financial steadiness.

The environment remained difficult throughout the month as the Korean won traded above the critical threshold of 1,500 won per US dollar. Currency traders kept a close watch on the exchange rate due to geopolitical tensions in the Middle East and ongoing net selling of South Korean stocks by foreign investors.

A significant contributor to the decline was the decreased value of South Korea's foreign securities, which comprise major investments in US Treasury bonds and other global assets. The valuation of these holdings saw a drop of $3.39 billion to reach $380.68 billion, making up over 89 percent of the total foreign exchange reserves.

Despite the decline in securities, several reserve components observed increases. Foreign currency deposits rose by $2.59 billion to reach $21.35 billion, while special drawing rights via the International Monetary Fund saw a slight uptick to $15.78 billion. Additionally, gold reserves remained stable at $4.79 billion during this period.

South Korea maintains one of the largest reserve holdings globally, ranking twelfth on the list as of late April. Economic analysts regard this robust reserve position as essential for cushioning against external financial shocks, bolstering market confidence and economic resilience during times of international uncertainty.
