A miraculous story unfolded on Sunday night when a six-year-old girl was discovered walking along the railway tracks following a catastrophic high-speed train accident in southern Spain that resulted in the death of her parents, brother, and cousin.
The unnamed child endured only a minor head injury, with reports from Spanish media indicating that the family was returning home to Aljaraque, situated near Huelva on Spain’s coast after a festive trip.
The family had celebrated the Epiphany holiday in Madrid, where they enjoyed The Lion King musical and toured Real Madrid’s iconic Bernabeu Stadium, according to local broadcaster Canal Sur.
Adrian Cano, the mayor of Aljaraque, hailed the girl's survival as “a miracle” while expressing the town's deep sorrow and inability to find comforting words amidst the tragedy.
After the accident, a police officer took care of the girl overnight before she was reunited with her grandmother in Cordoba, as confirmed by authorities.
Her story represents one of the many that have emerged from one of Europe’s most devastating train incidents, with families actively communicating via social media and local news to find missing relatives.
In another heartbreaking situation, a pregnant woman is in critical condition. Alberto Garcia, in an interview with broadcaster Antena 3, reported that his daughter, five months pregnant, suffered severe injuries and is on life support while doctors keep an eye on her unborn child, who still has a heartbeat.
Firefighters managed to rescue her from the wreckage after courageous passengers shattered windows to escape. Her sister Ana, who traveled with her and their dog, sustained minor injuries, but their dog, Boro, remains unaccounted for. Ana believes her sister was hurt while trying to protect the pet.
In response to the tragedy, Spain's government has announced three days of national mourning. High-speed rail services linking Madrid and Andalusia are currently halted as investigations and safety assessments are carried out at the accident site.
Julio Rodriguez, a 16-year-old local, assisted in the rescue efforts after passing the scene on his way back from fishing and was later acknowledged by King Felipe for his bravery during a visit to the community.
So far, 47 individuals are reported missing, but authorities have only managed to identify 10 victims officially.
Families are still anxiously seeking answers, including the kin of cardiologist Jesus Saldana, who has not been located among the injured or deceased. Although his mobile phone was retrieved, there is still no information about his current state.
