Abu Dhabi’s Department of Culture and Tourism (DCT Abu Dhabi) has partnered with Sphere Entertainment Co. to unveil the Sphere Abu Dhabi on Yas Island, a significant global entertainment site with a $1.7 billion construction budget.
This landmark will mark the first Sphere venue established outside the U.S., anticipated to attract international visitors. It will be situated between Yas Mall and SeaWorld Abu Dhabi, integrated into green spaces and adjacent to major attractions on Yas Island. The construction is expected to wrap up by the end of 2029.
Officials indicated that the initiative will enhance tourism, foster economic diversification, and solidify Abu Dhabi's stature as a key global entertainment hub.
He noted that His Excellency Mohamed Khalifa Al Mubarak, Chairman of DCT Abu Dhabi, remarked that this project embodies the emirate’s enduring vision and robust international collaborations. He emphasized that Sphere Abu Dhabi will present Emirati culture, talent, and narratives on a worldwide platform.
James L. Dolan, Executive Chairman and CEO of Sphere Entertainment, highlighted that Abu Dhabi’s aspirations and infrastructure render it a perfect site for expanding Sphere venues globally. He also pointed out that Yas Island is set to transform into a premier destination for immersive entertainment.
The venue will cater to three major event formats: immersive Sphere Experiences, concert residencies, and adaptable events such as sports competitions, conferences, and product unveilings. Advanced immersive technology will feature prominently, showcasing the venue's notable exterior LED display, the Exosphere, to deliver grand visual experiences.
Sphere Abu Dhabi will accommodate up to 20,000 attendees, depending on the type of event. It is also expected to create thousands of job opportunities during its operational phase.
Moreover, plans include the promotion of Emirati culture and artists while hosting international acts. The venue aims to provide immersive experiences reminiscent of Sphere Las Vegas, launched in 2023.
Strategically located near Zayed International Airport, Sphere Abu Dhabi is poised to leverage excellent transport connections and nearby tourism infrastructure, further reinforcing Yas Island's status as a global entertainment nexus, alongside projects like the Saadiyat Cultural District and the forthcoming Disney theme park resort.
Coordinated efforts among authorities such as Abu Dhabi Mobility, the Department of Municipalities and Transport, Taqa, Etihad Rail, and Aldar will be essential for infrastructure and transport planning to facilitate this initiative and surrounding developments.
