Veteran Swiss tennis player Stan Wawrinka, at 40, has declared that the 2026 season will mark his final appearance on the professional stage. Known for his formidable one-handed backhand and three Grand Slam titles, Wawrinka has been a significant presence during tennis's modern era, sharing the court with legends like Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic.
His career highlights include a spectacular run at the 2014 Australian Open, where he achieved a memorable victory against Rafael Nadal after besting Djokovic in a thrilling semifinal. Such moments have solidified Wawrinka’s reputation as a fierce contender against the sport's elite.
Wawrinka is set to face Serbia’s Laslo Djere in the first round of the Australian Open, marking his 20th singles entry at this prestigious event in Melbourne. Currently ranked 139th, he secured a wildcard entry into the competition.
On reflecting about his retirement, Wawrinka noted that thoughts of concluding his professional journey began last year. “Towards the end of the last season, between October and December, I was contemplating. I wanted to continue and was enjoying playing. I still do,” he expressed. “It became clear that next year would be my last. It was a straightforward decision, and I feel at ease with it.”
Despite enduring multiple knee surgeries and the challenges of age, Wawrinka has remained competitive, participating in nearly 30 matches on the ATP Challenger Tour while taking breaks from the main circuit when his ranking fell outside the top 150.
He kicked off this season positively, helping Switzerland reach the final of the United Cup, driven by the stellar performance of his teammate Belinda Bencic.
“I’m excited for this year,” Wawrinka stated. “One year in tennis is significant, but I’m committed to giving it my all and staying competitive as long as my body permits.”
Wawrinka’s forthcoming final season is set to be filled with excitement and fond memories for fans, providing an opportunity to celebrate the storied career of one of tennis’s most resilient champions.
