Tragic Fire in Swiss Bar Claims 40 Lives; Sparklers Suspected as Cause

Post by : Meena Hassan

On Thursday morning, a catastrophic fire erupted in a popular ski bar located in Crans-Montana, Switzerland, resulting in fatalities of 40 individuals and causing severe injuries to numerous others. Preliminary investigations suggest that the blaze may have started when partygoers waved sparklers too close to a ceiling lined with combustible foam.

Videos captured by patrons show sparklers being thrust into champagne bottles near the foam ceiling, which rapidly ignited. Many of those inside the basement bar were oblivious to the growing fire, continuing to revel until panic ensued.

Chaos erupted as the flames spread, with scenes depicting frantic attempts to escape, as individuals smashed windows to flee. Some victims managed to escape the fire and rush into the streets seeking help.

Authorities have reported that 119 individuals survived, though many are in critical condition due to severe burns and smoke inhalation. Local medical facilities have been overwhelmed, leading to numerous patients being transferred to specialized burn units in nearby European nations.

Jacques Moretti, the bar's owner since 2015, maintains that all safety protocols were adhered to. However, authorities are scrutinizing whether all safety regulations were adequately enforced and observed.

The exact number of patrons present during the incident remains uncertain. The establishment holds an official capacity of 300 indoors and an additional 40 outside, with casualties including citizens from Switzerland, France, Italy, Serbia, Belgium, and other nations. Identification processes for the deceased and injured are still underway.

The local community in Crans-Montana is reeling from this tragedy. Witnesses recounted horrifying moments, seeing people severely burned and crying out for help. Officials labeled this incident catastrophic for the resort town, warning that it may take days to fully identify all the victims as families await news of their loved ones.
