As the Super Eight stage of the ICC T20 World Cup begins, India is focusing on improving its batting against spin bowling. The Indian team will start its Super Eight campaign against South Africa in Ahmedabad.
Indian bowling coach Morne Morkel has expressed confidence that the batting unit will soon find its flow against spinners. He admitted that Indian batters have faced challenges on slow and turning pitches but believes improvement is around the corner.
Players like Suryakumar Yadav and Tilak Varma have struggled to dominate spin so far. Despite this, India has managed to post big totals, including a 200-plus score against Namibia.
Morkel explained that the team’s strategy is to play cautiously in the initial overs, build a solid base, and then accelerate later in the innings. He also highlighted that India’s strong bowling attack gives the team confidence to defend any total.
Statistics show India’s vulnerability against spin. Against the United States, India lost three wickets cheaply to spin. In the Namibia match, off-spinner Gerald Erasmus troubled the batters with a four-wicket haul. The match against Pakistan also saw spinners taking key wickets.
However, India showed improvement against the Netherlands, scoring freely against spin with minimal damage.
India will next face Zimbabwe in Chennai, followed by a clash with the West Indies in Kolkata. The team hopes to overcome its spin challenge and convert strong starts into match-winning totals.
