Taiwan Hints at Imminent Tariff Agreement with the US

Taiwan has signaled that it may soon finalize a tariff agreement with the United States, as a trade delegation heads to Washington for the sixth round of negotiations. The discussions aim to trim tariffs on Taiwanese exports, optimize the trade balance, and strengthen partnerships in semiconductors and the global AI supply chain.

These negotiations target a reduction of certain export tariffs from 20% to 15%, with both nations likely to announce agreed-upon areas in the aftermath. Following a consensus, Taiwan plans to arrange a formal signing with the U.S. Trade Representative, followed by a parliamentary review.

The Taiwanese delegation, headed by Vice Premier Cheng Li-chiun and trade emissary Yang Jen-ni, is set to meet with U.S. officials to nail down specifics. Despite optimism, spokesperson Benjamin Hsu reminded that outcomes hinge on mutual agreement between both sides, indicating that any announcement may take time. Sources suggest a deal could surface by late January.

Taiwan stands as a dominant force in global semiconductor production. Its proposal reportedly includes assisting the U.S. in replicating Taiwan's successful tech clusters around science parks. The potential agreement may pave the way for TSMC to establish further chip facilities in Arizona, complementing its commitment of $165 billion in investments in the United States, although TSMC has yet to confirm additional plans.

At present, Taiwan's chip exports remain unaffected by U.S. tariffs. Nonetheless, the White House has recently imposed a 25% tariff on certain AI chips, including Nvidia's H200 processors, citing national security reasons. Taiwan has underscored that existing agreements provide preferential tariff treatment for semiconductors, which they hope to extend under the forthcoming deal.

If this agreement is successful, it could yield mutual benefits for both nations. Taiwan would experience reduced export costs, fostering growth within its tech sector, while the U.S. would gain added semiconductor production and specialized knowledge on its soil. Experts also view the agreement as a means of strengthening U.S.-Taiwan relations and stabilizing the global technology supply chain.

The ongoing discussions underscore Taiwan's pivotal role in the semiconductor and AI industries. A formal arrangement could promote trade, stimulate investment, and bolster Taiwan’s position in international technology markets.
