In a bid to combat online fraud and technology-related offenses, Thailand has enacted stricter rules concerning social media advertising. The Ministry of Digital Economy and Society (DE) announced that the Electronic Transactions Development Agency (ETDA) now mandates identity verification for advertisers on major social media platforms prior to launching ads.
This announcement follows significant online debate surrounding the necessity of facial recognition and identity checks for advertisers. The ministry confirmed the accuracy of this information, highlighting it as part of the government's comprehensive strategy to protect the public from digital scams.
Officially published in the Royal Gazette on May 5, 2026, these regulations fall under the Electronic Transactions Commission's measures aimed at preventing technology-related crimes. They affect widely used platforms like Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, and other services operational within Thailand.
The new framework stipulates that advertisers must present official identification such as national ID cards, passports, or company registration documents. Additionally, some may employ digital identity verification systems that align with recognized standards to affirm their legitimacy before ads are displayed.
Social media platforms also bear responsibility under these regulations. Service providers need to gather and store advertiser details for verification purposes, maintaining this data for a minimum of 90 days post-campaign to aid in any necessary fraud investigations.
Officials project that these measures will significantly enhance digital safety by minimizing anonymous ads that deceive consumers. This policy aims to foster transparency in online advertising and boost user trust in digital platforms.
Furthermore, the Ministry of Digital Economy and Society has urged the public to remain vigilant while navigating online information, cautioning that false news and misinformation persist on social media, potentially leading to financial losses and privacy breaches. Citizens are encouraged to confirm information through trusted sources before disseminating or acting on it.
