Tragic Collision in Thailand Claims Lives of Nine Monks

Post by : Shakul

In a devastating incident in northeastern Thailand, nine Buddhist monks lost their lives after being struck by a pickup truck driven by an 11-year-old boy during their pilgrimage. The tragic event took place in Mukdahan Province as the monks were making their way along the roadside.

Local officials stated that the monks had embarked on a 260-kilometre pilgrimage to Ubon Ratchathani Province just half an hour prior to the accident. At the scene, five monks were pronounced dead, with an additional four succumbing to their injuries at a nearby hospital.

Injured Monks Remain Hospitalized

Emergency services swiftly arrived to assist the injured, transporting 13 monks to local medical facilities. Currently, three monks are reported to be in critical condition, receiving urgent medical attention.

Rescue teams, along with police and medical staff, collaborated to clear the site and support the affected individuals.

Investigation Underway

Authorities have detained the young driver for questioning, accompanied by child protection officers, while the circumstances of the incident are being probed. Witnesses indicated that the pickup truck was swerving before deviating from the road and colliding with the monks. Surveillance footage might shed light on the moments leading up to the crash.

Pilgrimage Concludes in Heartbreak

While participating in a traditional pilgrimage, the monks were walking in single file alongside the road when they were struck. This spiritual journey aimed to cover about 260 kilometres before reaching its destination.

The local community has been deeply affected by this tragedy, expressing their condolences to the families and victims involved.

Assessment of Road Safety Measures

Ongoing investigations are seeking to determine if speeding, driver negligence, or other factors played a role in this fatal accident. Authorities are also reviewing existing road safety protocols to better protect pedestrians and religious groups on long journeys.

Updates will be provided as the examination of the accident scene and vehicle progresses.
