Thailand and Japan Collaborate to Enhance KOSEN Program

Post by : Shakul

Thailand is enhancing its collaboration with Japan to broaden the internationally acclaimed KOSEN engineering curriculum across more universities nationwide. This initiative is designed to cultivate advanced technology professionals vital for Thailand’s industrial future and to bolster economic growth over the long term.

The update was provided by Lieutenant Colonel Dr. Patthadarasmi Thongsalooykorn, the Deputy Spokesperson of the Prime Minister’s Office, on May 16, 2026. She stated that the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation is coordinating with Japanese authorities to advance the second phase of the KOSEN initiative in Thailand.

KOSEN is a distinctive Japanese educational framework concentrating on engineering and technology training. Renowned internationally, it produces highly proficient technical personnel through a balanced mix of practical learning and industry-oriented education. The curriculum integrates theoretical knowledge with hands-on training, equipping students for real-world industrial roles and advanced technological sectors.

Thai officials highlighted that the expansion of this program aims to cultivate specialists vital for industries forecasted to drive Thailand’s economy in the future. These sectors comprise aerospace technology, semiconductors, synchrotron science, and digital technology, which are anticipated to serve as the main economic forces in the years ahead.

Recently, Professor Dr. Yotsanun Wongsawat, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation, engaged in talks with the Japanese Ambassador to Thailand regarding the introduction of the KOSEN curriculum to additional higher education institutions. Discussions also focused on certifying Thai KOSEN programs to align with Japanese educational standards, enhancing the global competitiveness of Thai graduates.

Alongside the KOSEN initiative, Thailand and Japan are intensifying cooperation in various advanced technological fields. They are collaboratively engaged in projects related to space technology, satellite development, systems for disaster warnings, climate monitoring innovations, and advancements in the digital economy. These endeavors align with Thailand’s broader vision of becoming an innovation-driven economy.

Additionally, Japanese authorities are set to ink a new memorandum of understanding with Thailand concerning space collaboration. This pact will enhance cooperation between Thailand’s Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation and Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, according to officials. This collaboration aims to further strengthen technological ties between the two nations.

The Thai government asserts that investing in education, science, and innovation is pivotal to its economic development strategy. Authorities believe that the KOSEN program will equip Thai youth with world-class technical education, foster better career opportunities, and position the nation competitively within high-tech industries globally.
