In a high-level bilateral meeting on the sidelines of the 48th ASEAN Summit, Thailand and the Philippines reaffirmed their dedication to promoting regional cooperation within ASEAN. This significant dialogue took place on Saturday, May 9, 2026, at the Shangri-La Hotel in Mactan City, Cebu. Attendees included Thai Prime Minister and Minister of the Interior Anutin Charnvirakul and Philippine President Ferdinand Romualdez Marcos Jr., showcasing the robust diplomatic ties between the two nations and their mutual aim for regional peace.

During discussions, Prime Minister Anutin commended the Philippines for its effective hosting of the ASEAN Summit. He acknowledged the smooth management of the summit proceedings, which yielded productive and actionable outcomes. Thai representatives commented on the strong collective commitment among ASEAN leaders towards cooperation, development, and shared progress across Southeast Asia.

Prime Minister Anutin also lauded the Philippines for setting up a trilateral meeting, noting it provided a valuable platform for participant countries to openly share perspectives and deepen mutual understanding on vital regional issues. According to Thai officials, the Philippines played a pivotal role in fostering an environment of trust, collaboration, and constructive discussions, which positively influenced the summit's success.

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. and Prime Minister Anutin addressed key areas for bilateral and regional collaboration, including food security, trade enhancement, investment, and energy cooperation. Both leaders concurred that closer cooperation in these areas is crucial for driving economic growth, ensuring regional stability, and securing long-term peace across Southeast Asia. They highlighted the significance of maintaining firm partnerships amid the ongoing economic and geopolitical complexities.

The leaders emphasized ASEAN's unity and the necessity for member nations to collaborate in amplifying the organization's influence within regional and international contexts. They recognized ASEAN's vital role in promoting peace, economic growth, and diplomatic relations throughout the Asia-Pacific region. This meeting illustrated both nations' commitment to support ASEAN's enduring objectives and bolster regional resilience.

The Thai Prime Minister’s Office reported that the results of their discussions were highly regarded, marking another milestone in the pursuit of peace and stability in the region. Officials noted that all parties involved were pleased with the progress and remained dedicated to turning dialogue into tangible actions and results for ASEAN member states.

The meeting between Thailand and the Philippines underscored the strong relationship between the two countries and their shared vision for a united ASEAN community. As regional challenges evolve, both governments are convinced that intensified cooperation in trade, energy, security, and diplomacy will be essential for sustainable growth and long-term stability in Southeast Asia going forward.
