In a groundbreaking effort, Thailand's Ministry of Interior is partnering with UN-Habitat to fast-track the localization of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) with a focus on creating sustainable urban environments and improving citizens' quality of life.
During a recent meeting, officials emphasized the success of the innovative “Waste Bank” initiative, showcasing how community-driven sustainability efforts are making significant strides nationwide.
The meeting, attended by high-ranking officials from both organizations, reviewed past collaborations and laid out strategies for future sustainable urban development.
Deputy Permanent Secretary Chaiwat Chuenkosum emphasized the ministry's dedication to transforming all 17 SDGs into actionable steps at the local level, aiming for inclusive development that reaches every community.
Chaiwat remarked that sustainability in Thailand is encapsulated through urban planning, green city initiatives, expanding public spaces, and enhancing housing standards via projects like the “Blueprint for the People”.
Central to the collaboration is the Waste Bank initiative, which embraces circular economy principles and the 3R model—Reduce, Reuse, Recycle—to optimize waste management and foster community involvement.
As per officials, waste banks now operate in 878 districts across Thailand, boasting over 8,700 active locations and more than 3.5 million registered participants nationwide.
This initiative aligns with the national “Clean Province” ambition, where provincial governors oversee coordinated waste management strategies throughout the regions.
Thailand is also collaborating with UN-Habitat and UNDP on a Local Finance Accelerator program aimed at enhancing climate-resilient development in pilot areas like Surat Thani and Khon Kaen.
Thailand's strides in sustainable urban development have garnered international attention, with UN-Habitat recognizing the country’s efforts and inviting it to partake in the 2028 World Urban Forum, as well as considering Thailand as a host for the 2030 event.
The Interior Ministry reiterated its commitment to ongoing partnerships with global entities to foster the creation of sustainable cities, bolster environmental management, and uplift the quality of life for all citizens.
