Thailand Greenlights Sports Fund Strategy for 2027-2030

Post by : Shakul

In a pivotal move for Thailand's sports landscape, the National Sports Development Fund Management Committee convened in Bangkok for a crucial meeting. This assembly aimed to outline the nation's sports development roadmap, bringing together key stakeholders and officials to strategize and plan financially for upcoming years.

The gathering took place on April 30, 2026, at the Office of the Prime Minister's Permanent Secretary, under the leadership of Deputy Prime Minister Songsak Thongsri. The discussions highlighted various vital topics regarding the progress of sports and athlete assistance, underscoring the presence of senior officials in emphasizing the agenda's significance.

Among the attendees was Surasak Panjaroenvorakul and other influential figures from ministry ranks and national sports organizations. Their involvement ensured a comprehensive examination of diverse sports development aspects during the dialogue.

A critical agenda item was the endorsement of the strategic framework for the National Sports Development Fund covering 2027 to 2030. The long-range plan aims to offer a definitive pathway for elevating sports performance in Thailand and ensuring that athletes receive adequate backing for competing on international fronts.

Alongside the strategic plan approval, the committee engaged in discussions regarding the operational plan and budget allocation for 2027. The emphasis was on optimizing fund utilization in alignment with national priorities, with authorities reiterating the importance of prudent financial oversight for enduring sports development.

The meeting also carefully looked at ways to acknowledge and reward athletes and coaches who excelled in international arenas, particularly those who distinguished themselves at the Asian Beach Games in China. The committee sanctioned prize money and benefits to support these individuals in fostering continued excellence.

Furthermore, athlete welfare was a significant theme, especially regarding participants in the ASEAN Para Games. The committee acknowledged the necessity of enhancing support systems for athletes, guaranteeing they receive essential care and opportunities for growth in their sports disciplines.

To foster equitable funding, the discussions included forming a subcommittee that will assess and refine the parameters for budget allocation across various sports. This initiative is anticipated to yield a more even and appropriate distribution of funds across different sports domains.

The committee also deliberated on strategies to augment revenue for the sports fund moving forward. An idea put forth involved analyzing potential tax implementations, such as a sugar tax and related levies, to generate extra funding. Such funds could be reinvested to further cultivate the capabilities of Thai athletes and bolster the nation’s standing in global sports.

At the meeting's conclusion, the chairman stressed the significance of transparency and accountability in all operations, affirming that decisions must prioritize athletes' welfare and success. This approach is expected to foster trust and ensure that Thailand continues to advance in the sporting realm.
