Thailand has officially embarked on a significant national initiative focused on preparing for its forthcoming international review concerning anti-money laundering and counter-terrorism financing standards. The initiative was launched by Justice Minister Police Lieutenant General Ruddhaphol Naowarat during a prominent event organized by the Anti-Money Laundering Office (AMLO) in Bangkok.
The launch event saw a gathering of high-ranking government officials, representatives from the private sector, civil society organizations, international experts, and delegates from regional financial intelligence bodies. The occasion underscored Thailand’s determination to enhance its financial security framework while aligning local regulations with internationally recognized standards.
During the event, the Minister of Justice reiterated that Thailand is encountering increasingly advanced financial crimes such as money laundering, cyber fraud, terrorism financing, and the exploitation of digital assets. He highlighted that criminal networks often operate through intricate financial systems that span multiple countries, emphasizing the necessity for international collaboration and robust regulatory frameworks.
Previously, Thailand has undergone international assessments in 2002, 2007, and 2017, each demonstrating progress in the nation’s ability to tackle illicit financial activities. The next evaluation is set for 2028 and will involve input from over forty government entities, private organizations, and civil society, adhering to standards established by the Financial Action Task Force (FATF).
Officials underscored the necessity for coordination across all sectors in preparing for this assessment. The government’s objective is to sustain an effective system for preventing money laundering, addressing terrorism financing, and combating the financing of weapon proliferation, perceived as vital for maintaining economic stability and safeguarding national security.
The initiative also acts as a forum for exchanging international best practices and bolstering institutional capacity. Experts from regional bodies, including Malaysia’s Financial Intelligence Unit and Singapore’s central banking sector, took part in discussions aimed at enhancing operational effectiveness and regulatory transparency.
Authorities are confident that achieving favorable results in the impending FATF evaluation will bolster investor confidence, elevate Thailand’s international standing, and support sustainable economic growth. The government reiterated its commitment to upholding a clear and globally trusted financial system capable of adapting to emerging threats.
