Thailand's former Prime Minister, Thaksin Shinawatra, is poised for full release as he receives a royal pardon following the Royal Decree on Royal Pardons 2026. This decisive announcement aligned with the Royal Command from King Maha Vajiralongkorn during Queen Suthida's birthday festivities.
Pol Lt Gen Rutthapon Naowarat, the Justice Minister, confirmed Thaksin's inclusion on the royal pardon list, noting he qualifies for immediate release due to having less than one year left on his sentence. This decision signifies a pivotal moment in the tumultuous political saga of one of Thailand's most impactful leaders.
At 76, the former politician will be able to remove his electronic monitoring device right away, although several administrative checks remain before the release is finalized. Provincial committees will assess the relevant paperwork as per standard protocol.
