Ghana's Thomas Partey Selected for World Cup Roster Amidst Legal Challenges

Ghana's Thomas Partey Selected for World Cup Roster Amidst Legal Challenges

Post by : Shweta

In a significant move, Ghana has officially added Thomas Partey, former Arsenal midfielder, to its preliminary squad for the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup. The announcement generated widespread attention within the football community. Currently playing with Spanish club Villarreal, the 32-year-old midfielder is among the 28 players selected by head coach Carlos Queiroz for the tournament.

Partey’s presence has sparked considerable discussion, particularly as he is facing serious legal allegations in the UK. He has pleaded not guilty to multiple charges, including seven counts of rape and one count of sexual assault connected to allegations made by four women between 2020 and 2022. Regardless of the ongoing legal situation, Ghana’s football authorities prioritize his midfield expertise and experience, thus retaining him in the squad.

Having departed Arsenal in 2025 after a five-year stint in the Premier League, Partey quickly signed with Villarreal in La Liga. He has consistently showcased strong performances and has remained active with the Ghana national team during World Cup qualifiers. Officials from the Ghana Football Association are reportedly optimistic that his leadership could be advantageous during the tournament.

Prior to the World Cup, the manager Carlos Queiroz has scheduled a training camp in Cardiff followed by a friendly against Wales on June 2. The coach aims to finalize the squad, trimming down to 26 players before the tournament begins. Ghana's preliminary squad features a mix of seasoned veterans and promising young talents as they gear up for a challenging group stage.

A notable absence from the squad is Tottenham's Mohammed Kudus, who is sidelined with a long-term quad injury, raising concerns over Ghana’s attacking lineup. Kudus has not played since January due to recovery difficulties. This setback places further responsibility on forwards like Antoine Semenyo and Inaki Williams.

Ghana finds itself in a formidable World Cup group alongside England, Croatia, and Panama. Analysts believe that the team's chances of progressing will heavily rely on seasoned players like Partey and Jordan Ayew. This World Cup marks Ghana's fifth participation, and they aim to improve upon their previous disappointing exit in Qatar 2022.

Partey's inclusion has elicited mixed reactions from fans and social media users. While some argue for the principle of innocent until proven guilty, others feel that football associations should take a firmer stance in such dilemmas. To date, the Ghana Football Association has not issued a detailed statement addressing the circumstances surrounding Partey's selection.

Despite the ongoing controversy, Partey remains a key figure for the Ghana national team, having debuted in 2016. He has played crucial roles in major tournaments, including the FIFA World Cup and the Africa Cup of Nations. Ghanaian fans are eager to see if he secures his spot in the final squad and what impact he may have in the upcoming tournament.
