TNI Defines Its Support Role in Jakarta's Crime Response

The Indonesian Military (TNI) has detailed its participation in addressing the uptick in street robbery incidents in Jakarta, asserting that its personnel will strictly support police operations and not replace civilian law enforcement. This comes amid rising public concerns about military involvement in domestic policing.

TNI spokesperson Brigadier General Muhammad Nas emphasized that military members assigned to assist would concentrate on public order maintenance, security patrols, and supporting crime prevention strategies. He affirmed that all law enforcement duties, including arrests and investigations, remain exclusively under the National Police's jurisdiction.

This statement follows a troubling rise in violent robberies, termed "begal" attacks, across various Jakarta neighborhoods. These acts often see armed criminals targeting individuals, heightening fears and prompting demands for enhanced security in the capital.

While TNI Commander General Agus Subiyanto has permitted military units to support police efforts when necessary, officials clarified that there isn't a specific military-led initiative against robberies.
