Tragic Fire at Delhi Hotel Claims 21 Lives

Post by : Shakul

A catastrophic fire at a hotel in the Malviya Nagar area of Delhi has taken the lives of at least 21 individuals and left numerous others injured. This incident marks one of the gravest fire-related tragedies in the national capital in recent times. Rescue operations lasted for hours as teams worked tirelessly to evacuate guests and control the rapidly spreading fire.

The blaze reportedly ignited around 8:50 a.m. within a basement restaurant of the five-storey Flourish Stay hotel. Officials stated that the flames spread swiftly throughout the structure, impacting a neighboring property and creating a challenging emergency environment in the dense Hauz Rani locality.

Confirming the toll, authorities revealed that the fatalities include both Indian nationals and foreigners. Initial reports suggest that many of the foreign victims hailed from African countries and Bangladesh, where they were undergoing medical treatments. Many guests were asleep when the fire erupted, leaving them little opportunity to escape.

Eyewitness accounts relayed scenes of chaos as trapped guests sought escape from the smoke-laden building. Some individuals broke windows and jumped from higher floors, while nearby locals and rescue teams set up mattresses below to cushion their falls. Videos captured the desperate measures taken by guests awaiting the firefighters' arrival.

Initial investigations have raised alarming questions regarding the hotel's adherence to fire safety standards. Officials indicated that the establishment was believed to be operating over its licensed capacity and lacked a valid fire safety clearance certificate. The building's sole entry and exit point and limited ventilation significantly impeded rescue efforts.

The Delhi Fire Service dispatched 17 fire engines alongside various emergency response units. Firefighters had to cut through a shutter to reach the basement, where several people were trapped. During the extensive rescue operation, a total of 37 individuals were saved. Investigations into the cause of the fire and potential safety breaches are ongoing.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi conveyed his condolences to the victims’ families and pledged financial assistance for those impacted. Delhi’s Chief Minister Rekha Gupta also expressed sorrow regarding the incident, assuring that comprehensive medical and relief support would be expedited. Officials have committed to a thorough investigation amid increasing scrutiny of fire safety compliance across commercial venues in the city.
