TransJakarta: A Catalyst for Economic Growth in Indonesia

TransJakarta: A Catalyst for Economic Growth in Indonesia

Post by : Shakul

TransJakarta is emerging as a vital economic force in Indonesia, transcending its role as merely a public transport system. A recent study underscores its impact on national output while alleviating the commuting challenges faced by residents in Jakarta.

Research from the University of Indonesia’s Institute for Economic and Social Research shows TransJakarta has yielded economic returns significantly exceeding the subsidies it has obtained. From 2015 to 2024, while receiving Rp 23.1 trillion in subsidies, it generated Rp 73.8 trillion in economic output and added value of Rp 33.9 trillion, demonstrating a remarkable multiplier effect.

For the daily commuter, the rewards are both evident and tangible. Jakarta residents save considerable sums each month on transportation, with those coming in from adjacent areas also enjoying significant savings. This shift has positioned public transport as a more viable and economical alternative to private car usage.

These findings question the long-standing transportation policies in Indonesia that have favored fuel subsidies and road expansion. While such measures may provide immediate relief, they frequently exacerbate long-term challenges such as traffic congestion, pollution, and a growing reliance on imported fuel.

TransJakarta presents a more sustainable solution by addressing various urban challenges at once. The system enhances mobility, mitigates environmental issues, and bolsters economic activity across diverse sectors.

Aside from direct commuter savings, the transit network fosters job creation and enhances public health. It is estimated to support tens of thousands of jobs yearly and diminishes healthcare costs by lowering emissions and improving air quality in the city.

TransJakarta's achievements illustrate the profound benefits that can arise from investing in public transport infrastructure. It calls for policymakers to reconsider their priorities and place greater emphasis on integrated transit strategies that simultaneously foster economic growth and environmental protection.
