Tropical Storm Cristina Sparks Alerts Across Central America

Post by : Bianca Haleem

On Monday, Tropical Storm Cristina emerged in the Pacific Ocean near Nicaragua, triggering weather alerts throughout Central America.

As reported by the National Hurricane Center (NHC) in Miami, Cristina boasts maximum sustained winds of 45 mph (75 kph). The storm is situated approximately 105 miles (170 kilometers) west-northwest of Managua, Nicaragua, and about 125 miles (200 kilometers) southeast of San Salvador, El Salvador.

A tropical storm warning is now in effect for coastal regions from Puerto Sandino in Nicaragua to the Guatemala-El Salvador boundary. Storm trajectory monitoring is a priority for authorities in the area as it navigates through the eastern Pacific.

Meteorologists predict substantial rainfall affecting Nicaragua, Honduras, El Salvador, and Guatemala until Thursday, with expected totals of 4 to 8 inches in various regions. Isolated spots could see up to 12 inches (30 centimeters) of rainfall.

Such substantial rainfall heightens the risks of flash flooding, river flooding, and landslides, particularly in prone and hilly areas.

Cristina marks the second tropical storm influencing the Eastern Pacific at this time. Additionally, Tropical Storm Boris is currently off the coast of Mexico and is anticipated to make landfall on Tuesday.

Residents in the impacted locations are urged to stay informed through official weather updates and adhere to the advice offered by local officials.
