U.S. President Donald Trump has voiced a tempered response to the tragic shooting of a Minnesota mother by an ICE officer, labeling the episode as “unfortunate” and “sad to see on both sides.” His tone has softened compared to previous remarks that firmly backed the officer while criticizing the victim.
The incident unfolded on January 7 in Minneapolis when ICE officer Jonathan Ross shot at Renee Good, a mother of three, as federal forces were deployed to enhance immigration enforcement. Footage analyzed by authorities indicates Ross fired the first of three shots as Good’s vehicle passed him.
Previously, Trump characterized Good as a “professional agitator” who supposedly ran over the ICE officer, suggesting the shooting was a self-defense measure. In his recent statements, he refrained from stating whether the officer's actions were justified.
“I won’t get into right or wrong. I understand it was a challenging situation to be in,” Trump remarked. He reiterated that the incident showcases a disregard for ICE personnel and local police, emphasizing, “It’s very sad to see on both sides.”
When quizzed about the possibility of pardoning Ross if he faces charges, Trump stated he would let the legal process take its course, calling the event “very unfortunate.”
Typically, federal agents enjoy immunity from state prosecution for actions taken during their duties, however, local officials have contested the assertion that the shooting was justified as self-defense. Despite the ongoing debate, Trump reaffirmed that ICE operations are crucial in U.S. cities to combat crime, although some of these actions have resulted in violent incidents. Data from ICE reveals that many of those detained recently had no previous criminal records.
