Trump Could Attend Iran Talks in Pakistan as Ceasefire Nears End

Post by : Bianca Haleem

Donald Trump might engage in the upcoming negotiations for peace with Iran slated to occur in Islamabad this week. As reported by Reuters, he could either attend in person or connect virtually, contingent on a successful agreement.

Sources within Pakistan indicate that all preparations have been made, with talks expected to commence on Wednesday. This development arrives as the two-week ceasefire between the U.S. and Iran is set to lapse that same day, and Trump has made it known that an extension is improbable.

Initially, there were fears that Iran might forgo the talks following the U.S. seizure of an Iranian-flagged vessel near the Strait of Hormuz. Nonetheless, a senior Iranian official has now mentioned that Tehran is “positively reviewing” the opportunity to participate, though no definitive decision has been reached.

Both parties appear keen on moving ahead, yet significant discrepancies remain. Trump is advocating for an agreement aimed at curbing potential hikes in global oil prices and mitigating risks to financial stability. He has also expressed that Iran must refrain from developing nuclear capabilities.

Conversely, Iran intends to leverage its strategic foothold in the Strait of Hormuz to negotiate relief from economic sanctions while aiming to continue its nuclear program without stringent constraints.

Tensions continue, with Trump cautioning that the U.S. may target key infrastructure in Iran should no partnership materialize. In retaliation, Iran has warned that it might strike power and water facilities in Gulf nations if provoked.

Amidst this backdrop, Pakistan is assuming a crucial role as mediator and host. Approximately 20,000 security personnel have been mobilized in Islamabad to ensure the safety of the talks. Reports also suggest that U.S. Vice President JD Vance will arrive in Pakistan to take part in the discussions.

While the situation remains fluid, all eyes are now focused on whether both nations can come together and reach a pivotal agreement.
