President Donald Trump has implemented a substantial increase in the tariffs on South Korean imports, raising them from 15% to 25%. This adjustment affects a wide array of goods, such as automobiles, lumber, pharmaceuticals, and others tied to reciprocal trade agreements.
In his announcement, Trump took aim at South Korea, asserting they have "failed to uphold" the terms of the trade deal established last year. He noted that while the US acted swiftly to lower tariffs as agreed, the legislative process in South Korea has lagged.
In response, South Korean officials highlighted that they had not received any formal notification regarding the tariff increase and sought immediate discussions with the US to clarify the situation. Industry Minister Kim Jung-kwan, currently visiting Canada, intends to travel to Washington soon for talks with US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick.
Following the tariff announcement, South Korea’s Kospi stock index experienced an initial dip but later rebounded with gains of approximately 1.8%, buoyed by recoveries in major exporter stocks.
The original trade accord, signed in October, committed South Korea to invest $350 billion in the US, with allocations for the shipbuilding sector. The US pledged to reduce tariffs on specific products once South Korea commenced its legislative approval. This deal was introduced to South Korea’s National Assembly in late November and is anticipated to pass by February.
Tariffs are essentially taxes on imported goods, and this hike means US companies importing from South Korea will now incur a 25% tax, leading to higher costs for Korean products.
Throughout his second term, President Trump has made use of tariffs as a strategy to fulfill his foreign policy aims. He has recently issued threats to impose a 100% tariff on Canada should it engage in a trade agreement with China, leading to diplomatic clarifications from both parties.
Additionally, Trump previously indicated potential tariffs on several nations, including the UK, in connection to his controversial proposals concerning Greenland, a self-governing territory under Danish sovereignty and a NATO ally. Despite retracting his threats concerning Greenland, the situation strained relations with Denmark and other NATO countries.
